How to Prevent Getting RSV
It’s RSV Season – Are You Prepared?
Winter is primetime for illnesses, as you have likely already discovered by getting sick yourself, through your kids, or through friends and family who have been getting sick recently. However, illnesses don’t just disappear with warm weather. With so many illnesses going around, it is important to keep you and your family as safe as possible and put some prevention measures in place. One of the most dangerous illnesses going around during this time is RSV. Keep reading to learn more about RSV, how to prevent it, and how to get exclusive access to an RSV vaccine through our RSV Vaccine Clinical Trial.
What is RSV and Why is RSV Dangerous?
Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that infects the nose, throat, and lungs. RSV symptoms make it difficult to distinguish it from the common cold or other respiratory viruses (like the flu or COVID-19). RSV spreads in the fall and winter, along with other respiratory viruses. It usually peaks in December and January.
RSV can also cause more severe illnesses, such as bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lungs) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs). It is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children younger than 1 year of age.
In the most severe cases, a person may require:
- Additional oxygen
- IV fluids if they can’t drink enough to stay hydrated or
- Intubation (having a breathing tube inserted through the mouth and down to the airway) with mechanical ventilation (a machine to help a person breathe).
How to Prevent Getting RSV
There are two main ways to prevent getting RSV. They include practicing good hygiene and taking advantage of the available RSV vaccines.
- Good Hygiene. Your hands are your first line of defense against germs, so make sure you wash them often. When you’re not able to wash your hands, make sure you use hand sanitizer often, especially after leaving a public place. Make sure that you and your children do not share cups, bottles, straws, or toys, and frequently clean often-touched surfaces such as doorknobs.
- RSV Vaccines. There are many RSV vaccines currently available; however, many of them have guidelines and conditions.
